WIW -- Updating the Dated (this time for real)

OK, I was told my last exercise in this challenge wasn't really dated, just classic. http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-challenge

This made me realize there is a difference between what is dated and what I'm just tired of. I think fitted tops was a look I wore for a good 10 years, so for me it feels old even though it's not dated.

Before Pictures 1/2 -- Da Nang (I was crazy about this brand) hi-lo midi skirt from 2003. I wore this to death until 2006. The back patch and military hardware (#2) are dated I think.

After Pictures 3/4/5 -- I am wearing a black cami and black sandals to create a column effect. The loose knit sweater has a hi-low hem, hiding the patch, and is on-trend. Since it was chilly that day I wore my BB Dakota unlined jacket over the outfit. I was told by one acquaintance that I looked like a glamor girl in this outfit. Which isn't what I was going for, but I guess compared to my environmental norm (jeans and sweatshirts), I am.

Thanks for looking!

I used to covet Da-Nang. Finally got rid of all my pieces. Including one pair of embroidered red cargo pants with giant chrysthanenums that I bought at Century 21 in NYC in futile hope that I would lose weight to fit into them. By the time I could fit into them they weren't my style anymore. I couldn't even sell them to Buffalo Exchange.
I like your update, but honestly think the skirt isn't quite working anymore.

What a difference a few pieces can make - I actually think the skirt does work this way. The hem is still current with the hi-lo length. You've added a fabulous loose knit blowsy sweater (very current) to it with a wedge, caged sandal (also very current). I love this outfit - what sandals are those Denise? They look very similar to the Doc Martens sandal.

  • CocoLion replied 11 years ago

The sandals are from Steve Madden Shannon. Got them last year.

I loved the look in 5. The skirt is on trend and the way I see it worn is with converse and a tank. Loved your mature version!

Hi-Lo is still on trend (maybe making another circle around) and I like the boxy top over the skirt. Brilliant to cover up that patch in back. I see why they did that as part of their brand but it's unfortunate. Can the brand patch be carefully removed at all? Like with a stitch picker tool?

    (I love those sandals, too!)

I think you did a great job of bringing this skirt into the modern age - I used to love those back patches, too, but I think people did eventually get tired of huge tags on the behind. It helps that the skirt is a midi length, too, because now it looks totally current.

I think your updated version is awesome - I'm seeing skirts like this all over the place, and the knit sweater is AMAZING.

  • DonnaF replied 11 years ago

You really rock that sweater like nobody's business, and I think the sweater + sandals could make a person wonder if he/she is seeing someone famous, hence the *glamour girl* reference. It doesn't mean bombshell, but that the look is on a higher level or three from what is seen in your environment. (Same sweater and sandals on me would look dumpy, and I would immediately catch on my watch and everything else on that sweater so I would have holes and strings hanging down every which way, so I wear those wonderful items vicariously through you!)

I think it looks great this way! I love that sweater.

  • Jaime replied 11 years ago

    Also love the after look.

  • cheryl replied 11 years ago

I think the updated version looks fantastic! You look so chic and i love those shoes too!

  • MNsara replied 11 years ago

I am in awe of pics 4/5! I can see why you were called a glamour girl -- because it is so chic! in pic 5, I think it's incredible that both skirt and sweater have the exact same angle! It makes for a very cohesive hi-lo outfit.

That means I prefer it without the jacket interfering with those beautiful geometric lines ;-)

Love the last two looks, Denise. The "details" of the skirt might not be on trend, but the overall silhouette is, particularly as you've styled it. Now --- if it doesn't make you feel fab, grab something else from your closet that does, and pass this one on. I'm really liking the fact that this hi/lo skirt has some structure, and is less extreme in volume and "slope" than the ones in stores currently.

Now....I'm going to go put on a classic wrap dress for brunch. Hardly a new look, but it's new and fresh to me!

I like the updated version, glamour girl, and I enjoyed hearing your thought process.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Wow. What amazes me is the way you get all the details right. The lines in the shoe echo the lines in the sweater, the hi-lo of the sweater echoes the skirt, and you have a neat combination of textures going on, too. It looks very hip and urban and also very "you" -of-this-moment.

  • Jjsloane replied 11 years ago

I'm loving the update. Another fan of the shoes here too.

  • Deborah replied 11 years ago

This looks amazingly current to me. Clever styling Denise and it's very you. Given the update do you expect to bring this skirt back into rotation?

  • Jonesy replied 11 years ago

I think this looks fab! Love how the horizontal lines on the sandals echo the lines on the sweater. The skirt works like this, IMO.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Dated, updated - whichever way you look at it - you look incredible in all of these outfits, Denise! You rock my style world.

  • Jem replied 11 years ago

I love these! I don't think you look dated at all!!! Add me to your shoe fan club, too!

  • replied 11 years ago

I saw this last night, but didn't have time to comment. I think it looks INCREDible on you, and I love the updating you did. Not that I could have ever tell is *was* dated (or anyone else in your town, lol)! Rock this fab skirt, please!

  • cciele replied 11 years ago

Fantastic Denise! I covet your sandals. Actually, I covet your whole outfit -- I love the silhouette on you.

  • Meredith1953 replied 11 years ago

The skirt looks awesome the way you have styled it and may I just say how much I LOVE both pairs of shoes!!!!
