WIW - to get the senior discount

My life is so uneventful right now.  My one occasion where I felt the urge to step up my outfit a bit was to go grocery shopping for dinner.  (Garlic & mustard roasted chicken, rice, and southwest salad.)  When the young male cashier asked me if I was eligible for any discounts, I remembered that it was Tuesday and that's senior discount day.  So I said yes, I get the senior discount!  He told me you have to be 55 to get that and I told him, yes, I just turned 55 in April.  I couldn't tell if he was genuinely doubting my age or if he was trying to flatter me.  Anyway he got an A+ for handling a potentially awkward moment well.

Jeans - Free people via Shopbop
Booties - Rag & Bone via Shopbop
Tee -- H&M
Necklace - Adia Kibur via Shopbop
Bracelet -- last year's NAS
Watch - Fossil via Macy's
Bag -- Nicoli via TJ Maxx  (never heard of this brand but the leather is fantastic!)

Each week when I post a WIW I pose a fashion question for the week.  Here goes this week's.  In this outfit I am wearing a lace bra.  Do you think lace bras work under tee shirts or should one strictly wear a smooth tee shirt bra with tees?

Thanks for looking and commenting!

I don't think he was trying to flatter you - you really don't look like what many cashiers expect 55 to look like.  You rock!  This is great.  As for the lace bra . . . I've never had one (itchy itchy) so I can't say.  I am loving my newest Wacoal push ups for tees.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Well of course he questioned your age Denise - none of the 55 year olds in my neck of the woods look this fabulous!

Love the soft tonal outfit with just the one pop of colour at your neck.

  • replied 10 years ago

I want to look like you when I am 55!

I wear lace bras under tees all the time. Most of the time they play nicely but occasionally the lace is bumpy or the T sticks to it.

  • annagybe replied 10 years ago

    Love this so much.

I generally wear a smooth bra under t-shirts, unless it's sheer and I'm trying to do something daring.

  • abc replied 10 years ago

I would have guessed you to be 35!  You look FAB!

I'm not a big fan of lace bras.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

The greys are so flattering, Denise. Maybe that is one of the gifts of age. :-) We get to wear these soft colours and fool people. HA!

You do not fit the teenage stereotype of a 55 year old. No way. And this is a fabulous outfit, from top to toe. Love the neon bright necklace against the softness.

On the question of lace bras...I don't think they are all created equal. Some seem to work just fine with a tee. Others, not at all. And tees are different, too. What works with a plain cotton might not work with a drapey rayon.

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Very chic!  Grey with just a touch of color near your face.  As for bras?  If it fels good and doesn't show, then it works!

  • rae replied 10 years ago

Really loving the soft tones with the bright pop of color near your face. Wish I could wear a sage green like that. I don't think the cashier had to pretend and all!

I am with Mo and have not owned a lace bra.

  • Isis replied 10 years ago

Fabulous outfit, Denise.  Definitely does not fit the stereotype of 55!  You look great!

I like smooth bras under a t-shirt; I find the bumps from lace distracting.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 10 years ago

Love this outfit on you! When I saw the title, though, I must say I was wondering if I would open the post to find you in a midi skirt, prim cardigan and granny shoes. I was trying to picture what you might wear to look eligible for a senior discount.
I try to wear my smooth bras with t-shirts. But it's not something I look for on other people. If the bra works under the shirt, go for it.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

For me this is one of your best! I love the tonal neutrals.
I don't think I've ever owned a lace bra so can't comment on them under tees but imagine it would depend on the weight of the tee and fit and style of the bra.

  • Marley replied 10 years ago

Great outfit Denise!  Such a beautiful color on you - and the boots are wonderful!  Currently, I don't own a lace bra - my last memory of them was that they weren't very comfortable, but I'm sure they've changed since then.  I like a smooth bra under a tee - but then, if the lace one doesn't make the tee look bumpy, then I guess a lace one would be OK!

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

I too want to look like you when I'm 55 - no wonder he didn't believe you (I wouldn't either!).

I wear a lace bra quite frequently.  It works under all but the super thin tissue-weight Tees that I have.  The tissue-weight one stick to it and show the bumps.

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Denise, I might have just hugged that young man!!  I love your outfit , it's the tonal thing that you do so incredibly well.  Regarding bras I am boring and tend to wear black and smooth under everything but I do think this looks fine on you.

I am flabergasted that the 'Seniors' discount age there is 55! Shouldn't it co-incide with the Retirement age?
Here it is 65 I think, and when I get there I am not sure that I will be owning up to it either :)

  • DeclawedJaguar replied 10 years ago

Denise, you look fantastic for any age! Lovely tonal outfit, and those boots are just delicious.

I have to come to the defense of lace bras. All lace is not equal! I too used to think lace was itchy, until I tried a Simone Perele Celeste bra. It is so soft, I forget that I have it on, and I have very, very sensitive skin. As far as lace under Ts, I agree with Suz - it depends on the T and the bra. As long as it doesn't show too much, I have no problem with lace under Ts. And when it's as hot as it's been recently, there is no way I'm wearing a thick, padded T-shirt bra!

  • CocoLion replied 10 years ago

Thank you for your kind comments!  I was asked the senior discount question when I was 53 and it really INSULTED me!!!  Probably bad lighting that day right?  ;-)  But now I'm happy to get the 5% - 10% discount that local stores offer.

Lyn I don't receive any retirement benefits until I'm around 67.  So I'm not really a senior.  But in the US AARP (the American Association of Retired People) says anyone over 50 is a senior!  At the movies it's 60 when you're a senior and at the ski resort it's 65.  So you see I have been studying aspects of being a senior!

As for the bra question, I have recently started to enjoy wearing lace bras because they make me feel feminine and attractive.  Even if they leave lumps and bumps.  But sometimes it annoys me how the bra clings to the tee more than with smooth bras.  It's true they are a little scratchy but all bras have some aspect of discomfort.

ETA Jaquar -- thanks for the Simone Perele tip!  I love her bras, I have three of them they are all combined memory foam and lace, so the best of both worlds.  I do agree that going for better quality makes a difference in the lace bra; also it needs to be at least a 2 if not a 3 part cup for uplift.

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

Love this look - it suits you so well.

It depends on the bra & the tee imo - trial & error. Which is why I tend to stick to a smooth bra.

  • lyn* replied 10 years ago

Whoa. You look fabulous - I love this column of awesome grey and your lipstick colour is so wow.

I think the lace bra works to add texture! :)

  • Adelfa replied 10 years ago

I LOVE your outfit. Love the toning colors from boots to tee, subtle and scrumptious, and of course the pop at the neck. And the arm candy. Everything!

  • goldenpig replied 10 years ago

Wow, no wonder he was confused, you sure don't look like a senior citizen in that rocking outfit! Glad you don't mind being old enough to get the discount...you look like you're sipping from the fountain of youth though! Funny side note, for some reason my DH got an AARP card in the mail when he was 35. I joked that it was because he was a grumpy old man on the inside, LOL!

Lace bras are fine under T's!

  • replied 10 years ago

Love the column of grey and WOW 55...yeah, no way did he believe you.

As for the bra I personally don't like bra texture showing so if the lace doesn't cause bumps no problem.  I also HATE those foam ridges caused by all those molded foam cups.  So my answer is what ever shows less under the tee.

  • jenanded replied 10 years ago

I so can not believe you are that age as you look just fine and so youthful! Love love love that outfit on you Denise :-)

  • Hil replied 10 years ago

You look amazing! And certainly not like a senior - and how amazing that you are happy to own your age!

  • Ornella replied 10 years ago

LOL, I'm actually crying of laughter. Denise, you are one fab senior and you certainly show them (us!) how it's done - you have the best sort of cool about you, and also by the bucketloads.

As for exciting life, it is crazy when dinner shopping is the highlight of the social week - tell me about it (recipe please for that chicken? Sounds delicious.)

The outfit... I see so much grey on the forum these days and I love it. Your summer take on head-to-toe grey is simply stellar.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Adore your outfit. The necklace is perfect here! I think he was honestly confused about your age - you look fab for any age!

  • Krista replied 10 years ago

    Ah, teenagers! So cute!
This outfit is fabulous - no wonder he was confused! YLF!
I can't wear lace bras so I can't comment. But I can say that with my own finicky rules about things, I would probably go with a smooth bra under a t-shirt. I would spend a lot of time worrying about whether or not it was bumpy under the shirt. I clearly need some help.... ;)

  • merwoman replied 10 years ago

You are ageless Denise!  Love this outfit on you - your signature style.
I've got very sensitive skin and find smooth and sleek undergarments work best for me.

  • Janet replied 10 years ago

LOL -- I realized I was starting to get old when AARP used the Buzzcocks in their TV ads, but no, I never would have thought to offer you a senior discount, Denise! I love your style regardless of age, but I hope to be as rockin' in seven years when I catch up to 55. :-) You always look so great in tonal looks, and this one is no exception. The addition of the necklace is brilliant.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

You made an impression on the cashier, Denise - and OF COURSE YOU DID. You are a gorgeous creature! In skinnies, tee, and boots - few can touch the insatiable panache with which you carry this look.

  • MsMary replied 10 years ago

This is gorgeous!  One of my faves on you ever!!

And I hope I look as fab as you when I'm eligible for the senior discount... in, like, two months!  LOL

  • Carole replied 10 years ago

Wow, youngest looking 55 year old on the planet! You look FAB!

  • replied 10 years ago

Happy sigh.  I always love seeing your outfits.  You look so cool and mysterious in this column of gray!

I usually save my lacy bras for date night.  I'm all about the spacer tee-shirt bras for everyday.

  • tarzy replied 10 years ago

This ain't your grandma's 55! You look fab, naturally.

I think our we YLF seniors confuse youngsters because we don't walk around in elastic waist pants and oversized pink sweatshirts. (I had no idea I was eligible for discounts already. I'll have to check it out!)

  • Parsley replied 10 years ago

    Great "shades of gray" outfit!
Are those the Newbury booties? I adore them.
Don't you hate that 55 is "senior", for crying out loud? (well, except that discounts are OK, I guess!) You look so fabulous and vibrant that senior is nowhere on the list of adjectives to describe you.

I'm all for lace bras as long as they don't look lumpy under my clothes.
I have this one that's a decent compromise for t-shirts:

  • MsMary replied 10 years ago

Oh, coming back to say all almost my bras are lace-trimmed because I tend to get the double-boob look if the top edge of the cup is just plain and smooth.  The lace eases the transition and prevents the problem.  I haven't noticed any problem wearing them under t-shirts and I certainly don't see any problem in your fab photos here!

  • Thistle replied 10 years ago

Love this look. I would have never guessed you were 55!  You rock and so does your fab style!

I only wear three part bras, so the seaming tends to peek through tees no matter what. I also second MaryK that the lace trim helps with spillage and DBS (Double Boob Syndrome!)

  • Cindy replied 10 years ago

I agree that you definitely do not fit the stereotype for over 50. YLF! ;)

i have lace bras that are smooth and some that are not. Of course the smooth ones are fine under thin knits.

  • Eliza replied 10 years ago

YLF- and who said 55 is senior?

Love the simplicity of your outfit.

  • Susie replied 10 years ago

That poor young man, he thought 'no way is she 55 but I can't call her a lia'

You look so fab; I love your style. You always look put together yet with an effortless ease about you.

  • AviaMariah replied 10 years ago

I'm sure he was genuine as I would never in a million years guess that as your age.  And I'm in love with that outfit!

  • rachylou replied 10 years ago

You can always fumble some sugar packets snitched from Denny's to convince people you've made it to 55... hehe.

I love the grey with the touch of neon from the necklace. Also, you are so good at the faux tuck!
