WIW - Poncho Style Inspired by Clint Eastwood

This morning when I saw Angie's blog entry about poncho style I did a double take.  Because yesterday I became officially (re)obsessed with ponchos.  "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" was on TV and while I only saw part of it, I was very taken by Clint's style in the trio of Sergio Leone movies.  There are some pictures in the latest entries of a Pinterest board of mine.

1/2.  I decided this was a very good, if a bit costume-y, outfit for my ranch lifestyle.  Shown with simple charcoal jeans and navy wrap worn poncho style.  The hat is from the 70s, it's actually even made in the USA, it belongs to my mother.

3.  Tried with tall Newbury heels but I think the Western low heeled booties work better here.  And much more practical.

4/5/6/7.  Inspiration pictures.

Thanks for looking and commenting!  I'm now officially on the hunt for a woven poncho with minimal patterns, the ultimate bad boy booties, and a shearling vest -- maybe.

    Interesting quote from Wikipedia:
"Eastwood was instrumental in creating the Man with No Name's distinctive visual style. He bought the black jeans from a sport shop on Hollywood Boulevard, the hat came from a Santa Monica wardrobe firm, and the trademark cigars came from a Beverly Hills store.[17] He also brought props from Rawhide including a Cobra-handled Colt, a gunbelt, and spurs.[18] The poncho was discovered in Spain.[19] It was Leone and costume designer Carlo Simi who decided on the Spanish poncho for the Man with No Name.[18] On the anniversary DVD for The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, it was said that while Eastwood himself is a non-smoker, he felt that the foul taste of the cigar in his mouth put him in the right frame of mind for his character. Leone reportedly took to Eastwood's distinctive style quickly and commented that, "More than an actor, I needed a mask, and Eastwood, at that time, only had two expressions: with hat and no hat."[20]"

This is such an awesome interpretation of the look! You know, it doesn't even look costume-y to me on the ranch. It just fits. Can't wait to see where you take this style exploration.

ETA: Love the hat and that it's from your mom. What do you call that style of hat?

  • kellygirl replied 10 years ago

Ooh, I love it, Denise. You look terrific. It looks like a cross between a poncho and a cape. Tres cool! I have a soft spot for Clint myself :)

  • CocoLion replied 10 years ago

Cathy I have no idea what it's called, I'm sure my Dad got it for my Mom, he was into all things Western, and he's no longer here to ask.  I almost wore a straw hat then decided to look into our coat closet and found this!  Without the hat it would not be the same.

I was just about to do a long study of the costume designer for this film and then read that Clint basically created this look, save for the poncho!

ETA -- If I were a designer I would look at these Sergio Leone movies so carefully for inspiration.  The Lee Van Cleef character has a great look too.

This is really cool, and I think you totally own this look.  I can't wait to see more.

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

So fab & as cc said not costume-y at all. I have such a soft spot for this look.
I was travelling at the time this was released in Australia & had temp work as an usherette. So I've seen bits of the film more times than I can remember.

    You look so very cool!

Now you've inspired me to get out my hats!
I have a black stetson that I love but rarely wear, but I've also got a fedora that could be a more urban version of the look.

    You are so fabulous!

That's pretty interesting about Eastwood, too.

  • gryffin replied 10 years ago

OOOOh, Ooooh pick me!!!  Hand waving in the air!!  Cocolion!!  Not Clint Eastwood, Cocolion now replacing Raquel Welch to star in the remake of Hannie Caulder!!  You have my vote!!

  • CocoLion replied 10 years ago

Gryffin you are hilarious!  I would mop the set bathrooms as a job just to be near Robert Culp.

  • K. Period. replied 10 years ago

Ha ha! (Or maybe that should be wa ah ah ah ah!) I was watching TG, TB & TU yesterday afternoon too! You look good, Bloooooondie!!!

  • gryffin replied 10 years ago

Omg, you in your poncho and hat, on hands and knees scrubbing the BR floor with Robert Culp shouting at you,  too funny!!  wait - didn't we see that?  Yes, do you remember RW trying to shrink those oversized jeans in that big ball and claw tub?  Talk about your early fashionistas!!  Gosh, we definitely need video of that!!  Cocolion, I am seeing a career move here!!

LOVE this look! I have a very similar cape. Mine is black with blue trim and maybe not quite as long as yours. I'm going to dig it out this week. Beautiful black lab. We lost ours in August. She was 16 1/2. Miss her everyday! Did I see in a chocolate in one of your pics last week? We lost her about a year and a half ago to cancer. Miss my dogs!

  • goldenpig replied 10 years ago

You just MADE MY DAY. So cool.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 10 years ago

Great outfit! You really rock the look. The hat makes it! Maybe you need some Frye harness boots, if you don't have them? (just a thought toward your shopping list)

  • Debra replied 10 years ago

  • Laura replied 10 years ago

Spectacular!! Now, this is how you wear a poncho!

  • pil replied 10 years ago

Now this is awesomeness without (as was discussed on another thread) trying too hard. You look great in this Denise. Never - until now - would I have looked to Clint for fashion inspiration. That first inspiration photo is really pretty incredible.

  • Ariadne replied 10 years ago

Just saw this.  INCREDIBLE.  You are an inspiration!

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

This is a super look on you.  I am a big fan of ponchos and have added a couple to my wardrobe late last year.  I figure I should snatch them up before they phase out again.  They always seem to come back in style though.
