WIW - More Angie Ensembles and how to lose 10 lbs + 10 years during the holidays!

As I mentioned in my last WIW, I wanted to challenge myself to use Angie's ensemble series to create outfits this week.  Here's the continuation.

1/2.  Party outfit inspired by "Ankle Pants with Ankle Strap Shoes"
3/4.  Casual layers inspired by "Casual Layers with Cuddl Duds"
5/6.  Holiday shopping outfit inspired by "Classic Fall Casual" ensemble.
7.  Showing my Secret Santa gift -- stud earrings!

----
Now for the part you've been waiting for -- how to lose 10 lbs/10 years during the holidays!
- First, take a picture of yourself in front of a skinny retail mirror (picture 5)
- Second tip -- lean forward (picture 3) -- it will take inches off your thighs, and by pitching your torso forward your legs look miles long!!
- Third tip:  never actually get a camera lens close to your face.  Instead, take a picture from at least 3 ft away (preferably 5-10) then crop out everything but your face.  (Picture 7) The grainy, blown up picture wipes away crows feet and turkey neck.  No retouching wand needed!  Also the use of flash fill is like a bit of botox or at least equal to a soft focus filter.  Seriously. OK just half serious.   ;-)

Thanks for looking and commenting!  Any further weight loss/anti-aging tips welcome!

omg all these are gorgeous!  And your tips: check, check, check – taking notes and learning. Love your silver top!

  • Angela K replied 10 years ago

Too funny! I don't think you need to lose any weight. You look fab in all the photos but 1 is my fav. The shoes rock! I'm so jealous, I would love to own those. So enjoy them extra for me! :)

Hi Denise, looks like we both Pinned the same Angie Ensembles for inspiration!
I LOVE #5 with the scarf and distressed jeans particularly.
I think a smile is my favourite tip for looking our best, and making current trends our own.

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

Denise, you are a hoot! Anti-aging tips indeed! I prefer my pictures taking from the distance: close ups hurt!
I am totally in love with your style. It looks so effortless and chic and edgy - all in the same time.
I think I will follow in your footsteps this week and try to use Angie's ensembles too...

  • CocoLion replied 10 years ago

Thanks Gracie and Angela!  These pictures seem to hide the 5 lbs (at least) that I have put on since Thanksgiving.  Mostly due to holiday chocolates and salty snacks!

ETA -- Lyn and Sveta we posted at the same time!  I can hear Angie laughing  1000 miles away in Seattle.  Lyn yes a smile is a great anti -aging tip!!  And Sveta, I had a lot of fun using Angie's ensembles this week.  The exercise netted me 4 decent outfits which is a higher rate of post-worthy WIWs than I can normally achieve.

I love the metallic with animal print mix in #1, and the pattern mix in #5 a lot. #3 reminds me more of something I'd wear, but I think the cool part of YLF is being reminded to try things outside our comfort zones!

In an entirely good way, you make me think of that super cool aunt that everyone wishes they had, that talks about her wild college years and still has drinks with dinner and lets you sleep at her place when you're mad at your parents. Or perhaps I'm just nutty! Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is, I'm only 25 so I don't know if I need any anti-aging yet, but I'd definitely like to adopt you as my cool aunt, so we can hang out and buy funky jewellery together and compare scarf tying tips. Because you're awesome. :D

(good grief, I suspect I need to lay off the caffeine here, because I sound even more crazy than usual. LOL)

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Denise, you are hilarious! I am taking notes, because you look so wonderful, you must be doing something right! That silver sweater is just beyond belief fab! I would like to steal it. ;)

Love the other outfits, too. Isn't it fun to play with Angie's ensembles? I have really enjoyed that this fall. I haven't been able to create outfits from all of them (I lack some of the key pieces) but the ones I could do, I did with a vengeance...and plan to repeat, too!

  • deb replied 10 years ago

Love this and your tips. I will have to try this this week.

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

My tip is to only look at photos that are at least 5 to 10 years old - I look back & realise how good I looked even though at the time I couldn't see it :)

You on the other hand look amazing in all of these - the first outfit is one of my favourites of all time :)  You are beautiful Denise & age has absolutely nothing to do with it :)

  • MsMary replied 10 years ago

You look fab, Denise, with or without special effects!  LOL  These are all just fab but I have particular mad love for the first one with that amazing shiny sweater!!

    Here's my tip:

Fourth, get a new camera and despite trying as had as you can to get it to focus properly, consistently take photos that look like you've put gauze over the lens!  Soft focus is your friend!  ;)

  • Aubergine replied 10 years ago

Love all of them, but especially #1! Every piece there just seems so well-chosen and so perfect together.

And I think I'll be leaning forward in every picture from now on!

  • Mo replied 10 years ago

Too funny!  You don't need the tricks ;)  You look fab all on your own.

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Love the tutorial, Denise!  And the outfits.  That metallic sweater in #1 is stunning, and I'd love to wear it to my imaginary NYE party.  #3 is a fab "holiday travel" outfit.  Can you tell I'm getting ready to pack?

One of the best anti-aging tips? Have a glorious bone structure, bright blue eyes and shining hair!  But I see you already know that!

  • Jjsloane replied 10 years ago

These outfits inspire me - they are so great. #1 appeals to my magpie gene, #3 to the little boho I have and #5 is my I want to be French gene. Your hair looks great BTW.
I can't imagine you need weight tips, but I will be attempting these over the next week in hopes of some success.

  • sarah replied 10 years ago

You are hilarious. I love all of these outfits!!!!!!!!!!

  • karymk replied 10 years ago

Oh how you inspire me! This is exactly how I want to look.  I am working on dressing down my usual look, adding in more jeans outfits.  You look fantastico.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Your outfits are all wonderful and your tips are hysterical. My best tip definitely involves ineptitude with the focus.

  • CocoLion replied 10 years ago

Lol Shevia and MaryK -- a sloppy focus works for sure!  I also recall the vaseline on the lens trick a photographer told me to try.  And Caro, your suggestion of only looking at pictures 5 years old plus is hysterical!

I thought of a few more anti-aging tricks:
    - DON'T wear glasses.  For distance or for reading.  That way everything will be a pleasant blur.
    - Only stand in dim, soft lighting.  Everyone looks great in candlelight right?
    - How about the vampire trick of never being out in daylight?  Or at least, direct sunlight?

And for those of you who commented on the sweater -- I got it at last year's NAS (2012).  It was an Angie pick, which she described as a Sci Fi trend item.  I find I have gotten the most use out of it during the holidays, when a little sparkle is perfect!  I got one compliment on the sweater and at least 5 comments on the shoes.  Even the men noticed the shoes!  And yes I was the dressiest person at the party although the hostess came close.  Numerous female guests showed up in sneakers, baggy jeans and sweatshirts (and not the fashion kind).

  • Elizabeth P replied 10 years ago

Great post! I had a good chuckle over your tips :).

This is a great idea, consciously following some of Angie's ensembles, for several days I do the odd one here and there, but could probably stand to try more often. Thanks for the inspiration! I also like how you posted them.

  • replied 10 years ago

You are too fabulous for words. Love!

  • Parsley replied 10 years ago

I love all your "Angie's Formula" outfits! That sci-fi sweater is so very fabulous!
And your anti-aging tips are a hoot. :-)

  • lyn67 replied 10 years ago

Ha, Denise, are you hillarious! You don't need these tricks at all, but I love them!:-) I do have one of those slimming retail  mirrors  in my hall (at least I do think so) as I love taking my picties there, but nowhere else! Also, warning, leaning forward may be good  for longer legs, but for D cups and more, it  can be a pain, or am doing it wrong??:-)

BTW love your shiny outfit in nr 1, and the portrait is also great looking! The other2 are great casuals!

  • replied 10 years ago

You are so funny Denise! I second your idea not to wear glasses. When I got mine earlier this year, and looked in the mirror for the first time, it was like I aged 10 years in one day, lol!

I love your sci-fi sweater outfit. You look so beautiful and stylish, and the shoes really do stand out. Your interpretation of Angie's formulas should go into the archives, they are that good. Gorgeous close-up! Your hair looks so thick, shiny and healthy--and I know that no camera tricks are causing that perception! :)

  • Janet replied 10 years ago

Denise, you crack me up! I may or may not confess to those tricks. ;-) I definitely hear you on the not wearing my glasses thing -- I'll think I look awesome and then put on my glasses and go, "Oh..."

You look fantastic in these outfits. Is that the Hinge sweater/sweatshirt? I have that same one and you've given me a good styling idea, although I think mine is a little too big to semi-tuck. I'll have to try it.

  • Sarah A replied 10 years ago

As usual, i am awed by you amazing style! I am taking notes on the sweaters... the sci fi i love that the whole thing is shimmery, as opposed to just the front panel :) The hem in #2  is perfection and showcases your slim legs. The striped top is classic but you have modernized it with the distressed jeans and modern drapey fit. I dont know how you stand to look so great ALL THE TIME. You are truly one of my style inspirations :)

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

You crack me up. I've met you Denise, and you look even more smashing, gorgeous and fabulous in person.

Thank you for showing the forum how you integrated the formulas into your killer casual style. Your style integrity is innate and inspiring. Every look is eye candy, and oozes pizazz. You have it going on, Queen Farm Fashionista. xo

  • K. Period. replied 10 years ago

Aah ha ha! Love it, Denise! Your outfits are beautiful and fun, just like you.

  • carambola replied 10 years ago

You are such an inspiration! You look amazing in all of these. Taking notes on your outfits and your tips, except... those retail mirrors? I try to convince myself that they are true to life. It's the other ones that lie ;)

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

I'm in love with #1. I love the subtle shimmer and the high contrast. The shape of the pant looks so well supported but the sleek shoe. So very fabulous!

  • Marley replied 10 years ago

Oh Denise - you're cracking me up!  I love your weight loss/anti-aging tips!  However, I'm going to disagree with tip #2 (leaning a bit forward).  This stratedgy works only on those people who are smaller on the top than on the bottom!  If you (me) are much bigger on the top (through the shoulders and arms) than on the bottom - well, then you lean forward just a teeny-tiny bit and whoa! - you look like a linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers!  Case in point - see attached photo.  No, that's not the Hulk - that's me, leaning forward just a titch - notice how my legs look like toothpicks - and my arms/shoulders look like steroids nirvana??  Yea - so, I need to lean back not forward!
I do agree with you on the anti-aging tips - you gotta' love that soft focus lens!

OK - now to your outfits.  These are all the kinds of outfits that I want to wear.  I remember that sci-fi sweatshirt from last year (it was during my self-imposed SYC - but, oh was I ever tempted!) - now seeing it on you, reminds me of "the one that got away."  ;-(  Also, you have shown me a cool way to wear stripes - I have no stripes in my wardrobe because they have always felt just too preppy for me - but seeing that oufit - I need to reconsider!

    Thanks for posting!

  • E replied 10 years ago

You look so stunning in all of these! I can't even pick a favourite, they're all so fabulous.

Your tips made me laugh too! :)

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

Great antiaging tips.  I think you've covered them all here. :)

Fun outfits.  I really like adding a little sparkle for holiday time so #1 is my favorite of the bunch here.

  • Thistle replied 10 years ago

    You crack me up!

I am in love with #1!  I love all of the outfit pins.

  • AJ replied 10 years ago

Gah, #1 is so so FAB!  I've been trying to add silver sparkle to my holiday wear this year and it's not going so well.  So I'll just have to live viacariously through you.

You're tips made me smile, but you do not need them one bit.  You must have a soda fountain of youth at that restaurant!

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

Denise, you are one of my style icons! I can't get enough of your outfits and especially that you challenge your environmental norm without fuss or fanfare, just being yourself.

  • Vicki replied 10 years ago

You are truly fabulous, beautiful and FUNNY!  :)

I am in awe of the way you take Angie's ensembles, make them YOUR OWN, and look both elegant and casual, which is my style goal.  I'm loving that top in #1 and #5 (who makes the striped one?).

Now, about your photo-taking tips, next time you're in town, we're going to do this IRL.  I also think the App store for iPhone needs a camera app for these additional "features."
