WIW - Age Appropriate Hard Edge

I'm continuing to love Spring because I can still wear pants, but with sandals if I feel like it.

These outfits look rather hard edge to me with all of the black.  But still I felt age appropriate so, happy with the results.  Yes I still worry about that, not wanting to be the fool but wanting to push the envelope a little too.  It's a fine line, isn't it.

1-2 The silky sweatshirt that Angie blogged about recently.  Angie picked this top in 2012 from Zara and I jumped on it.  Haven't worn it much because I fear it's not too flattering but I got a compliment from a woman standing in line at the Costco food court ($1.65 sundae).  She said people who wear leopard have a lot of confidence.  I told her, it was only in some areas of my life where I felt confident!

The sweatshirt is worn with:  Rag & Bone skinnies in Kensington wash, Vic Italy booties, Zara leather jacket also 2012, and Alexander Wang-esque bag from UO.  I got it in their SF store, it's made from re-cycled leather and has so many pockets that I call it my Lumosity bag.

3.   This was a WIMW a few weeks ago, and this time I actually wore it to an open mic night.  It's fast to put together and my boyfriend thought it looked rock and roll.  I thought, more art gallery opening in NYC due to the lack of leather, but I'll take it.

UO knit harem pants worn with:  UO sweater, Raquel Allegra tee, Steven sandals from 2010.  I think they still look current.  If you are interested in the UO harems, they are very cheap now.  Regarding the negative review, if you size up there is no discomfort at all in the waistband.

Very nice! I agree with the lady in Costco, you look good in that sweatshirt. It's a little like a scarf print too I think. The colours echo the shades of your hair nicely and I like the topper and bag you chose to complete the outfit. #3 is cool and dramatically edgy. It's a great silhouette. Good layering too.

The bag is terrific & I LOVE #3 - the shape of the top & the multiple-strap sandals make it very current. I think you know exactly where the proverbial fine-line is CL :) No reason to worry imo,  think it's about knowing what works for YOU at any age :)

  • Greyscale replied 9 years ago

Oh! When you said leopard in your post I was not picturing an actual leopard. I love it. The bag is such a great find, too.

(And I've never seen you post anything that wasn't fabulous and age-appropriate, but I know it can be stressful to think about.)

great bag. love both the outfits. the leopard is fun and dresses up and down. and the rock and roll outfit definitely rocks. i think those shoes are still totally on trend, and the harem pants are just fab!

Fab outfits. Denise I have never seen you wear anything that you didn't totally "own". You have such a good eye and I don't think age appropriate is ever a concern. Loving the UO harem leggings on you...glad you got them. I love mine so much ad at that price thinking I might just order a second pair. Can I ask what size you bought?

  • Jaime replied 9 years ago

Great outfits but the third one is my favorite - I am still loving harems after all this time :-)!

  • pil replied 9 years ago

I agree with Deborah and that sweatshirt looks great on you. The colors are so nice with your hair.

  • Janet replied 9 years ago

I love #1. I can't imagine what would be deemed not flattering about that top on you -- it looks great. You have age-appropriate edgy yet approachable rocker style absolutely nailed.

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

Fabulous outfits Denise!  I don't think you ever need to worry about age appropriateness, you look so stylish and put together, that doesn't even enter the equation.

  • merwoman replied 9 years ago

Denise - always age appropriate, always stunning, always confident!
You wear everything with panache. Look at the longevity of that leopard topper - so 2014! Gorgeous colours on you  - you sholud wear more often!

  • jackiec replied 9 years ago

I love both outfits! I can see why the lady complimented you - you look casual, cool, and approachable!!! You do all silhouettes perfectly. Loving the harem pants look with those sandals too - wow :)

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

    Too cool for skool!

And thx for the UO tip. I like Staring At Stars stuff from them.

  • Beth Ann replied 9 years ago

Definitely a "grown-up" edge.  I love the animal "print" --- what an interesting piece, and the overall effect is fashion forward, but still approachable and flattering.

    Great bag, too!

  • kellygirl replied 9 years ago

These are terrific! You look edgy and age appropriate! I especially love the harem pant outfit. Those are amazing on you!

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

Both outfits are killer. High five, Mr. Denise.

The first outfit is more hard edge than I'm used to seeing you wear - more because of the moto and bag than anything else. But the front patterned panel on the silk sweatshirt does a lot to soften the look to my eye. TOTALLY age-appropraie and you're rocking it, Queen Farm Fashionista.

  • rae replied 9 years ago

Love it! Especially 3 - so Elizabeth and James. You also manage to find the best things at UO. I was in there with the sister this weekend, and I already felt really old in the midst of all the "cheeky" cutoff shorts.

  • Kiwichik replied 9 years ago

Denise - I don't think you gave to worry about pushing the age appropriate barrier as you innate sense of style has no age boundary - you always look current and just plain fab.

  • Parsley replied 9 years ago

I love that Zara sweatshirt on you, Denise! That first outfit is urban cool with just enough edge.

I agree that the second one looks very New York artsy more than rock and roll, and I love it on you!

    2 super looks!

  • E replied 9 years ago

Wow! Gorgeous and edgy all at once! You look so cool. :D

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

I am nodding along to Rae's comment. I'm always amazed by the great stuff you source at UO. Whenever I go there I see baby doll sheer tops or teeny cutoffs!

Love both these outfits. The Zara sweatshirt is so flattering on you. It works beautifully to soften the hard edge just enough.

And the UO outfit (with those amazing -- and yes-- still current -- sandals) is just genius. Looks like a fantastic hang out in the house outfit, too.

Laughing at your "Lumosity" bag comment. I hear you. Women of a certain (brain) age unite!

  • Aida replied 9 years ago

Denise, you always do an amazing job with your clothing choices and styling, so all the worry seems to pay off; "age appropriate" has never crossed my mind. Both outfits look fabulous!! As always I adore seeing that Zara black leather jacket (I let that one get away, boo). Like Angie I like seeing the silk paired with it to soften the look up. The second outfit is both arty and rock-n-roll to me. I think you're set for trendy with those sandals, as long as ankle straps or wide foot straps stick around (probably a good while). Love the contrast of the rigid, structured sandals against the very soft materials and layering above.

Love the leopard, and the colour combinations here suit you to a T!

  • Marmee replied 9 years ago

Great outfits!  Love the leopard sweatshirt #1/2 especially.

  • sarah replied 9 years ago

You have such consistently great style, Denise.

  • annagybe replied 9 years ago

    Ack! I absolutely adore #3.

  • Aubergine replied 9 years ago

Love them both! I'm always a fan of how you can do edgy with a little bit of soft still in there.
