WIW -- Layering inner over outerwear

Winter finally arrived, we had our first snow storm of the season on Saturday but by Monday it was mostly over and the snow was gone from the ground.

I read that vests over overcoats & jackets were seen at NY FW 2012. I thought I'd try the same concept with a cape. I tried it last month over a jacket. http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....furry-vest

1/2 -- Leather coat (have owned it for years), faux fur vest, MK clutch.

3/4 -- Sessun via UO cost, Caslon sweater cape. Couldn't resist #4, I was commanding "Stay" and it was caught by the timer.

Since this layering is fairly complex I kept the outfits tonal to keep true to my minimalist style direction.

Thanks for looking Ladies!

Denise I really like the fur over the leather coat. Very edgy and cool! The cape looks good too. I looked at it expecting it not to work but I think it does. Keeping it tonal adds a classic touch I think.

I agree with Deborah -- the faux fur and leather combo is really chic!

Brilliant idea, and FABULOUS looks! I would not have believed it could work from the sound of it, but now that I've seen it... :-o

Love the textures of the first, glossy and furry, in that deep brown with your golden hair --- the brown seems to pick up the darker honey lowlights in your hair.

And you wear ALL shades of red beautifully, it would seem from the second outfit! Lucky you!

Keeping it tonal Denise totally made this work and not look "bulky". Lovely!

Love #1 Denise! It's so funny to see folks in coats when it's going to climb into the 80's in Chicago today? Where is Spring? #2 works because of the tonal low contrast color combination, although I prefer the proportions in #1. I amazed you can find some flexibility in your outer wear! Brava!

I really like both outfits! The cape one is my favorite as I wasn't expecting to like it from your description, but I think it looks great.

Your dogs are SO CUTE!!! Just as cute as you :)

#1 and #2 are KILLER. Love your look, Denise.

Oh, gotta try that fur over leather thing! ..you look great!

What a great idea! ...off to try my furry vest over a coat....

  • CocoLion replied 12 years ago

Thank you ladies for supporting my desire to sport unusual silhouettes! And thank you Angie for the "killer"!

It seems today we are back in spring, everyone ate outside today. It's hard to imagine we can go from snow on our restaurant deck and 4 days later people are outside having lunch in t-shirts. That is crazy CA mountain spring weather for you.

Beth Ann, #1 is the same outfit as #2 and I agree, it looks better from the side. But I thought, full disclosure, let's give it a harsh front shot. I try to photograph outfits directly without too much fashion subterfuge in the poses. :-)

Love the layering and the cape! Very becoming.

I love both, but my favourite is cape over coat! It is just so unique and fabulous :D

I love these both but especially 1/2 - if it weren't in the 70s here already I would try it. I hope you get a bit more winter to wear these!

  • Janet replied 12 years ago

I love it! Especially 1/2 -- I would love to copy if it weren't already getting up to 80 degrees here today!

    CocoLion,
What beautifully minimal and sophisticated looks. I love all the chocolate tones in the first 2 pics and the richness the fur brings and the 2nd outfit is just so lovely. The layering is beautiful and I like the burgundy tones in the tight with the color of the cape. Bonus points for sweet doggie!
