Wearing a "Wall of Color"

... As opposed to a "Pop of Color." This effect has been shown lately.

#1 -- I wore this yesterday. Yes, it's true, a utility pole has been sprouting from my head this spring.

I did get compliments but felt too bright too blue too much. But I had fun going maximal with the accessories. I layered two gold necklaces and two big beaded bracelets over my watch!

#2 -- Three shades of green. Somehow, I like this because the tonal wall of color approach works better without prints. At least that is what I've learned experimenting with this trend.

What do you think? Are you/have you tried the tonal dressing trend wearing spring colors or brights?

I just laughed out loud at the utility pole comment - my husband always manages to take pictures of me looking like something is growing out of my head.

I love the wall of color look, and you have such a great figure! This outfit really shows it off. Which green skinnies are those? They look super.

I haven't tried the tonal dressing trend other than black or grey, which doesn't count because they aren't really colours. But you're making me want to! Although I think both looks are great, I'm completely smitten with the green version. There's something that's both colourful and soothing at the same time in this combination. I also think the proportions are spot on.

BTW I'd see a doctor about that utility pole problem (lol)!

Just checked your links - I LOVE the shopbop looks, especially the red and pink - I think I could do the reverse with red skinnies and blush cropped moto...

  • Kirti replied 12 years ago

I really like #1 but #2 is out of this world! Amazing! :D

  • Sunita replied 12 years ago

Ooh...really like the green outfit. Like Shannon, I haven't tried this other than with black or gray. Or a tailored pantsuit. Very tame compared to your looks (especially #1 which is very vibrant).

I'll need to ponder this some more before giving it a whirl.

Well, CocoLion, these two outfits are actually really nice! You look amazing in them! The first one is tonic, cheerful, and not at all "too blue", I can assure you. It's a look you don't sport often, but I would encourage you to wear it more often, as it suits you. And the second one is harmonious, peaceful, and graceful. Very inspiring.
    Thanks for posting!

I think you look great and its definately not too much blue! Love it

  • sarah replied 12 years ago

    I think these are great!

My favorite is the green outfit -- there's something about the minimalism of solids, for sure, to offset the wall of color. Well done!

  • Laura (rhubarbgirl) replied 12 years ago

I like the tonal, especially in the solids. I always struggle with how much 'change' between colors to use, so that it looks intentional and not just that my shirt and pants don't match, you know? You look great in both, but I agree that I think that the solid looks more sophisticated and current, somehow.

I like that term, "wall of color." I think your outfits are most successful(!)

I haven't done a single color head-to-toe in quite awhile. If I were to do it tomorrow, I'd do grass green... but I don't have any grass green bottoms. Hmm. A wardrobe hole? LOL

  • MsMary replied 12 years ago

I love both of these! Although the term "Wall of Color" reminds me of Phil Spector and the "Wall of Sound."

    Chuckling @ Mary.

Denise, you totally pull off the boldness of #1. You have panache, girl! Very fab :)

I LOVE mixing tonal colours together too. It's fresh and fun - along with high colour contrasts. #2 is just as great!

  • replied 12 years ago

Gorgeous and fresh! And your terrific figure really does show in #2. You look fab!

  • annagybe replied 12 years ago

Love the green one. I was at the Rack today looking for mint skinnies so I could do a total mint look. Didn't find any, though they had lavender which was very tempting.

  • Sarah A replied 12 years ago

#2 is my fave... But #1 also very nice... Hard to decide between such great looks. Have not tried the trend yet but #2 inspires me to try a go at it!

  • replied 12 years ago

Love both looks! I think tonal dressing looks so sophisticated and cool :)

  • biscuitsmom replied 12 years ago

    Simply beautiful!

  • Jonesy replied 12 years ago

I love both of these looks!! I always love your volume-on-top-skinnies-on-the-bottom looks, but #2 is a fun way to shake up the silhouette with something more fitted on top--looks fab!

MaryK, if Phil Spector and his hair haunts my dreams tonight, I am blaming *you*!!!

  • rae replied 12 years ago

I thought the same as Mary! Hehe!

I really love #2 - the monochromatic look is edgy and still minimal. Plus all shades look great on you.

#1 is a lot of color for me, personally, but you do pull it off. Somehow the wall of color is just as rebellious as a wall of black.

  • Suz replied 12 years ago

Well, I've heard of having a big head, but this takes it to new heights! (Sorry, couldn't resist...)

In all seriousness, though, I love this play with colour. Both looks are terrific. #2 in particular seems to fit with the more minimalist direction you've been heading. And it's sort of sweet and sassy at the same time.

  • Sveta replied 12 years ago

I really like #2, Denise. You pull off skinnies with a regular top length so well I am green with envy here :-) I find that anything shorter that tunic length and skinnies on me spells disaster!
Hmm, I would like to play with wall of color idea too but I am not sure I have enough items in similar colors...

  • ManidipaM replied 12 years ago

What an inspiring idea, Denise, and you illustrate the concept so well. I love how #2 adds interest to low-texture basic-pattern solids; but I have to say I don't find #1 OTT at all and indeed prefer it --- I think you look fabulous there!

  • Scarlet replied 12 years ago

I really love one. It looks great on you!

  • Deborah replied 12 years ago

I adore both looks but #2 is my fave here. The tone on tone idea is really quite lovely. I particularly like it in softer colors. This is gorgeous.

  • bella replied 12 years ago

    I love #2. such a serene combo!

  • rute replied 12 years ago

Love you style! Always on the top of the trends! Fabulous colors!

  • fashionista replied 12 years ago

I loved how you could carry off both these colorful outfit. And those skinnies (both) are fab!!!

  • replied 12 years ago

I love the first one, and the second outfit is lovely too! You are rocking the wall!

  • nicoleb replied 12 years ago

Heh, Anna i have an eye out for mint skinnies too! No luck here yet either. :(

Denise i think you look great in both but i really like #2! I saw a bunch of looks like this a few weeks back in an email i received from Shopbop and i was admiring it! You pulled it off amazingly!

  • Lisa replied 12 years ago

Two lovely looks! The printed top in #1 is really fun but that color in #2 takes the cake. It's stunning on you!

  • greenglove replied 12 years ago

Absolutely love both looks on you! You are so great looking and stylish!
Tonal dressing is something i have done for years but you have inspired me to do it even more deliberately!
