Backpack Update and Freebird Western Oxford Pointy Toe Bootie Review

I have purchased and returned two backpacks so far.  Both of them fail mainly on this point:  they are way too big on my petite frame.  They look so different on the models!  I guess I need to start re-imagining bags on my short self the same way I re-imagine tops, coats etc.

Pictures 1 and 2 -- Rebecca Minkoff Logan backpack (now sold out) on just barely 5'4" me and the 5'11" model.

Pictures 3 and 4 -- Same comparison with the Rachel Zoe Montana backpack.

Picture 5 -- The backpack that I now have on order is the B Brian Atwood Juliette backpack.  It looks dinky on the model so it might just work on me!  I also like that it is more structured.

Pictures 6 - 8 -- Freebird Esquina booties.  I haven't been able to wear these yet because summer lingers on, I'm still in sandals or work clogs.  I jumped on these in early August before the fire (breaking one of my rules not to buy fall merchandise until October-November) because I was afraid they would sell out.  I see they are in stock again.  They are comfortable and something in between a Western boot/pointy toe bootie/oxford.  Note how they work with a cropped pant!

    Love them all!

Wow, that is a big difference in the backpacks between you and the models! That's weird because you seemed really tall to me based on your WIWs, I would never have guessed that you're petite. Hope the third time's the charm! The booties look great with your outfits!

I definitely like the Brian Atwood bag much better than the other two. It's super cute, I hope it ends up being a good size for you. Also those boots are awesome!

Thanks ladies!  I thought it might be instructive if I posted how different these bags look on a shorter person.  Also because I am short waisted it is most pronounced.  The bag that ends on the waist of the models ends below the rear on me.

Since I don't get to do much B&M shopping, I have started to develop a model vs. me eye for fit.  Even things like necklaces can look very different on me.  The biggest issue is tops and jackets.  I truly need a petite top and jacket, but the selections available tend not to be as fashion-forward as I would like.  I continue to think this is a business opportunity.  I used to love shopping in Tokyo and Hong Kong because I am average there not petite.

I know this is totally off the point - but your shirt in #6 is awesome!  Okay, back to backpacks, lol.  I had a 'tiny' one in the 90's that I can't remember the brand of.  I feel you on the sizing issues.

FAB booties!! I am swooning here. You look amazing in those. Also nodding with Mo about shirt in #6.

And thank you for the most instructive post about bag sizes. I often have this experience and have learned to be extremely wary and to look at what the measurements say. My "tote" is actually what they usually call a "shopper." Ha!

Good luck on the backpack hunt.

    Love the booties!

I tried a backpack from Zara and loved it but had the opposite problem! It was too small for what I needed!

Those booties look perfect on you - great decision to buy!  The backpacks do look huge on petite you - great illustration. I hope the next one works out.

Great illustration of the true size of things. Love the styles you have picked so it is too bad they are too big.  I have to remind myself alot that the pictures can lie when perusing online shopping. But I also loved that two tone shirt.  So cool.

Love the shoes. Love the concept of the backpack for you and hope you find one that scales better. I had no idea so much appreciate the illustration

Hope the new smaller backpack works out and killer new pointy toe booties. Perfect for Queen Trendy Urban Farm Gal.

I cannot believe how large the backpacks are. They make you look like a kindergartner with a big kid backpack. Good call on those and I hope the new one works better.

Wonderful booties! Fingers crossed that your backpack works out.

  • donnat replied 10 years ago

Wow who knew? Hope the smaller bag turns out for you. Nice booties.

    The boots are great!

I sympathise on the backpack issue. I know exactly what you're talking about.

Great visuals regarding backpack sizing - thank you for posting this Denise.  I find the same thing in handbags - the scale can often be overwhelming on my frame.  LOVE your boots - you were wise to snap them up when you did...imagine how disappointed you would be if they were gone come October.

I love those booties! And I do so appreciate seeing these things on someone who is close to my height (although I would have never guessed it if you hadn't told us). Waiting for the new backpack to arrive.

    Love the booties!

I'm guessing you'll be really happy with your new backpack. And the booties are a great combination of refined and rugged--a combo that appeals to me too!

  • rae replied 10 years ago

ZOMG, the booties! So, so, cool. As is that black/white top. Total wantsies on both... you know I went straight to the boot pics, so I have to go fan myself for a while before returning to the backpacks, lol.

FUNky boots! And this from a gal with pointy-toe poison eye.

  • kkards replied 10 years ago

love the booties. i know that you feel that the backpack in #3 is to big, but i really like it.

Great boots!  I love your visuals with the backpack.  I wouldn't have guessed height would make such a difference.
